I had a requirement of an email notification feature when list items are changed. Although, SharePoint alert is relatively easy option, it has the following drawbacks:
1) You have to manually setup the alerts for users, or instruct each user to create their own.
2) More importantly, we would like to use a list column as the recipient of the notification which is not provided out-of-the-box (OOTB).
With SharePoint workflow in tow, I came up with a mechanism to send out notifications when an item is changed. I’ve created the workflow and added conditional elements based on item status so that messages will be sent to appropriate parties.
Problem solved and users get the necessary updates that links to the site.
